Pioneers saw the Mississauga Indians harvesting the wild rice and processing it into a tasty food, which the pioneers referred to as a form of wild oat, and they too harvested it, a welcome additional source of food for the winter months. While the supply of wild rice was ruined by the raising of the water level and other factors, the name has stuck. But some say that wild rice can still be found in the lake's marshy shallows, if one looks for it.
